New rules for taxis go into action soon, says an official

KABUL (SW) – Officials at the traffic police general directorate of the Ministry of Interior say that the process of painting taxis with the newly approved color will begin in two weeks and the new rules imposed on taxis will also be implemented.

This is after nearly two months passed since the new color was assigned to taxis..

Tamim Esmati, the administrative deputy of the general directorate of the traffic police, told Salam Watandar that the reason for the delay in the process of painting the taxis was due to the carefulness in carrying out this process in a transparent and legal manner.

He added: “We are waiting for the notification process to be completed so that companies come to volunteer. When we have 150 thousand taxis, a new and orderly process is required. God willing, this process will start within a week.”

A number of taxi drivers in Kabul, complaining about the increase in private cars in the city, said that their income has decreased and they cannot paint their cars. Mohammad Alam Haqyar, a taxi driver on the airport road in Kabul city, said that instead of setting an exorbitant fee, the government should first collect private cars that operate illegally to create order before the process of painting taxis.

He aadded “The government should enact a law on private car collection. We are not satisfied with its color. Yellow and white is the international color. We do not have the ability or money.”

Najibullah, another taxi driver in Kabul city, said: “The reason why our business is ruined is because of the cheap private cars. Our cars have the right color and are new. We don’t even have money to get the documents, let alone the money to paint the car.”

The general department of traffic police of the Ministry of Interior announced the beginning of the process of painting taxis two months ago. It announced that by painting taxis, insecurity, corruption and kidnapping will be prevented.
