KABUL (SW) – Officials at the Kabul infectious disease hospital say that the number of people suffering from Congo fever is increasing in the city, and in the last two weeks, more than eight people have died as a result of this disease.

Faridullah Omari, a specialist trainer at the hospital, said: “Before Eid, we had six to eight people in the hospital, and after Eid, when people did not consider the health and hygiene, the number of people in our hospital has reached 40 people, and the deaths have increased to reach more than eight people”

Officials at the hospital in Kabul mention the lack of space for patients as one of the major problems of this hospital and asked the Ministry of Public Health to provide a bigger place for this hospital to deal with such situation.

Health experts at the hospital in Kabul call high fever, headache, muscle pain, stiff neck, back pain, red eyes, and depression and anger as the main symptoms of Congo fever.
They have asked the citizens to strictly observe hygiene measures to prevent Congo fever from spreading.

Faridullah Omari added: “When we slaughter and butcher animals, and if our hands and feet have wounds, we should not approach the animal and must wear gloves, glasses, masks, and after the end of the slaughter, the skin of the animal should be buried and burned.”

Amanullah, one of the patients at the hospital in Kabul, said that he dealt with animals during the days of Eid and this caused him to get Congo disease. He added: “On the day of Eid Al-Adha, we sacrificed a cow and after that I got Congo disease.”

Razuddin, another patient at the hospital in Kabul, said that after a few days of Eid al-Adha, he found out that he was infected. He added: “I went to a butcher shop and I didn’t see anything in the butcher shop, and they brought me meat. After that, I was healthy for four to five days, and after that, the symptoms of this disease became clear.”

It should be mentioned that last year, 160 people were infected with Congo disease in Kabul city and 35 of them died.
