KABUL (SW) – A number of Kabul residents have complained about the increase in electricity breakdowns, saying that they have not had access to electricity for more than 10 hours a day for several days.

Amin, the owner of a sewing workshop in Kabul, complaining about the electricity breakdowns, said that due to the lack of access to electricity, his sewing machines stop working for six hours a day. He added that this situation has caused him to fail to sew more than 20 clothes every day. Amin said: “During these two days, six working hours, we don’t have electricity and only during these two Eids we can work and with more work we can pay our debts and if this continues, we won’t be able to work this Eid or make ends meet.”

Ahmad Fahim, another resident of Kabul, said that he does not have access to electricity that has caused him to not be able to keep the house cool to take care of his children in the harsh summer. He added: “We don’t have electricity at home for eight to 10 hours a day.”

Officials at the power utility, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) say that due to the increase in the demand of the residents of Kabul for electricity, the supply has also increased. Hekmatullah Meyvandi, the spokesperson of DABS, told Salam Watandar that right now this company can only provide 70-75% of the electricity needed by the residents of the capital. The spokesperson added: “As much as the electricity is considered, the demand is higher and so that the residential areas of the lines are not damaged and their transformers are not destroyed, we impose electricity breakdowns.”

According to the statistics, more than 422 megawatts of electricity is needed in Kabul, but this company can only provide 324 megawatts per day.
