Unexploded remnant of war claims five lives

MAIDAN CITY (SW) – At least five children got killed and two others were injured due to the explosion of a mortar shell left over from previous wars in Maidan Wardak province, officials have confirmed. 

Officials in Maidan Wardak say the children were killed in the Dashttop area of Saidabad district on Friday.

Director of Public Health, Dr. Muhammad Zarak Zhirak, told Salam Watandar that the children who were victims of the incident were less than 12 years old.

According to him, the injured were taken to Kabul Emergency Hospital due to serious injuries. The incident happened when the children were playing with an unexploded mortar, he said.

It is worth noting that such fatal incidents occur from time to time due to the explosion of unexploded ordnance in various parts of Afghanistan.
