Drought leaves recreational spots deserted

TARINKOT (SW) – Many recreational spots in Tarinkot, the capital of Uruzgan, turn green naturally in the spring attracting many domestic tourists but, the recent drought has completely destroyed these natural places.

Locals demand that small dams should be built for the rehabilitation and fertility of these places. Two local residents Khudai Dad Alkozai said: “The foothills of Bakhod Mountain and other deserts and areas that used to be green for the landscape in the spring season and used to have tourists, but recently they have been destroyed due to the lack of water. We request that the officials find a suitable solution for re-greening these places.”

Another local, Aga Sherin said: “The parks built by the government are not what the youth want. Our request to the authorities is to build suitable parks for the youth, so that the youth can come and have a party there.”

Residents of Uruzgan say that now there are only two amusement parks in this province, but they are not good enough to attract people’s attention.

The officials also admit that due to the drought, the natural recreation areas in this province have been destroyed.

The mayor of Tarinkot, Maulvi Muhammad Rafiq Hanar said in an interview with Salam Watandar that he will pay more attention to the parks built by the municipality and for the restoration and greening of natural recreation places. He said he has built a number of check dams in the deserts.

This comes as drought has caused severe damage to the agriculture and livestock sectors.
