Flash floods kills and injure 10 people across Afghanistan

KABUL (SW) – Latest round of flash floods have killed and injured at least 10 people across Afghanistan, confirmed officials. 

Officials at the Ministry of Disaster Management say that as a result of flash floods in the provinces of Zabul, Kunar, Nuristan, Balkh, Uruzgan, Laghman, Farah, Faryab and Nangarhar in the last three days, three people have died and seven people have been injured. According to the officials, 756 residential houses were completely or partially destroyed as a result of these floods.

Earlier, Shafiullah Rahimi, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Disaster Management, told Salam Watandar that as a result of last week’s earthquake, 10 people died and 60 people were injured in different provinces, and more than 800 residential houses were destroyed.

“The Ministry of Disaster Management has instructed all the provincial directorates to manage disasters through telephone calls, so that in full coordination with the leadership of the Ministry, survey teams will be sent to the affected areas at the same time as they respond to the affected areas, and help will be sent from all facilities”.

On the other hand, residents of a number of provinces that have been affected by floods or earthquakes say that they have suffered huge financial losses as a result of these events.

Mohammad Naeem, a resident of Darzab district of Jawzjan, who was affected by the floods of the past two days, said: “Due to the floods in this district, residential houses, agricultural lands, plantations and side roads were all destroyed.”

Hikmatullah Hamidi, an employee of Takhar’s department of information and culture, said that the earthquake has killed two people and injured 18 others in four districts of the province. “In addition to the loss of lives, the earthquake in the districts has caused the loss of 50 livestock and the partial destruction of 120 residential houses in four districts of Takhar.”

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Disaster Management has emphasized that this ministry has helped 53,000 families in the last month in coordination with national and international aid organizations and has prepared a plan to prevent losses caused by floods. .

As a result of the floods in Zare district of Balkh, 300 residential houses were destroyed, 300,000 acres of agricultural land were flooded, and hundreds of livestock were also lost.

It should be mentioned that the Afghanistan Meteorological Department has announced the possibility of heavy rains in the coming week.
