UN agencies not exempt from ban on females, says Mujahid

KABUL (SW) – The UN agencies are not exempt from the ban on females working in the non-government organisations, said an official on Sunday.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman of the Islamic Emirate, said in an interview with the BBC that the decree banning women from working in domestic and foreign non-governmental institutions in Afghanistan was issued to “protect the dignity and chastity” of women, and this decree applies to all non-governmental organizations, including the United Nations.

Mr. Mujahid added that the government of the Islamic Emirate has come to the conclusion that women should not work in these institutions under any circumstances. He emphasized: “Because these institutions are not under the control of the emirate, the risk for women is high and we have received dangerous reports.”

The spokesman of the Islamic Emirate has compared the work of women in non-governmental institutions to theft. In response to the question of what the women breadwinners of their families should do, he said: “If someone argues that I am stealing; But I deliver food for the children, we cannot allow him to steal.”

Zabihullah Mujahid stated: “Institutions that deliver humanitarian aid in Afghanistan must consider certain values. If they do not consider the principles and values, then Afghans do not need such assistance”.

The Ministry of Economy stopped the work of women in domestic and foreign non-governmental institutions in Afghanistan on Saturday. This decision of the Islamic Emirate has caused widespread national and international reactions.

It should be mentioned that after stopping the work of women in non-governmental institutions by the Islamic Emirate, several international organizations have stopped their activities in Afghanistan.
