Islamic Emirate authorities agree in principle to lift ban on women, girls

KABUL (SW) – The Islamic Emirate authorities have agreed in principle to lift the ban imposed on women and girls in the country following recent meetings with Potzel Markus, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General.

In the separate meetings between the UN Envoy and the authorities of the Islamic Emirate in the past weeks, it has been emphasized that women and girls should return to work and education in order to prevent a humanitarian disaster in the country.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Akram Arefi, a university professor, told Salam Watandar that although the efforts of the United Nations to remove the restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan have worked but it has not had any concrete results.

“The recent efforts of the United Nations and the meetings of the representative of this organization with the leaders of the Islamic Emirate have been effective but it is not tangible. But we can refer to the statements of some officials of the Islamic Emirate for a solution to solve this problem, and if there is no change, the issue of legitimacy will be delayed.”

On the other hand, Mehboob Mohaqiq, a professor at a university, said that if the Islamic Emirate does not reconsider its past decisions, the issue of its recognition will be ruled out.

“If the Islamic Emirate does not change its recent decisions towards women, not only will it not gain international legitimacy, but the United Nations will also close its office in Afghanistan.”

On the other hand, Seyed Shafiqullah Sadat, an expert on international relations, said that if the Islamic Emirate does not reconsider its recent decisions regarding women, both the people and the government will be affected.

The senior UN Envoy to Afghanistan has reiterated the call to lift the ban on women working in non-governmental organizations and studying in universities.

Potzel Markus, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, said this in a meeting with the Islamic Emirate’s minister for Promoting the Good and Forbidding the Evil, Mohammad Khalid Hanafi.

“Latest discriminatory bans against women by Taliban prevent life-saving help reaching Afghans & will hit #Afghanistan economy. @PotzelMarkus met today df Taliban Min. Moh. Khalid @MOPVPE1″,tweeted the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

Thousands of people have lost their jobs as a number of international nongovernmental organisations suspended operations operations in Afghanistan in protest against the Islamic Emirate’s move of not allowing their female staff to work.
