Afghans deported from Turkey complain of ill-treatment

KABUL (SW) – A number of Afghan citizens who have recently been deported from Turkey are complaining about mistreatment in special camps for migrants and forced deportation.

Gul Mohammad Ataei, an Afghan citizen who was recently deported from Turkey and now lives in Ghazni, complains about the forced deportation, saying that before the deportation, they were promised a job in Afghanistan.

“They kept us in the camp for three months and said it was not a forced deportation. Later, we were brought to the airport and forced to be deported. We wanted to go to Italy, they took us from the cars and brought us to the camp.”

Complaining about the bad situation of Afghan immigrants in special camps in Turkey, he said: “The situation was very bad in the camp, there were no proper rooms at all. I was in the Malatya camp, the situation was bad there. There were a lot of immigrants in the camp, almost more than 3,000 people.”

Similarly, Ali Akram Hosseini, a resident of Daikundi, who emigrated three years ago to escape family violence and achieve a better life, says: “First I went to Iran, then I went to Turkey and I was in Turkey for 14 months and I was working there to go further and make a better life for myself, they arrested us with many hardships, I was in the camp for a month and they directly deported us without any questions, they deported us forcibly.”

Afghan immigrants in Turkey, who mostly went to this country through illegal means, always face the risk of forced deportation.

Meanwhile, Zia Ahmad Takal, the deputy spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, says that the ministry is trying to return Afghan immigrants from Turkey safely.

“Unfortunately, Afghans who have gone to Turkey illegally and live there and want to go to other countries, Turkish authorities arrest them and send them to camps. The Afghan embassy in Turkey and the consulate are trying to bring these Afghans to Afghanistan.”

The Turkish government recently announced that it has deported nearly 500 Afghan citizens. According to reports, more than 5,000 other Afghan citizens are detained in Turkey and will be returned to the country in the coming days.
