Over 300 Afghan men, women and children in Pakistani jails

MONITORING (SW) – More than 300 Afghan migrants, including women and children, are in Pakistani prisons as Islamabad has given the refugees until December 31 to leave the country or face jail.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, has said it is concerned about the situation of Afghan immigrants in Pakistan. It said in a report that more than 300 women and children (139 women and 165 children) are imprisoned in the city of Karachi, Pakistan, due to lack of legal documents.

The report states: “We are concerned about the situation of Afghan immigrants; 139 women who went to Pakistan for treatment, as well as 165 children under 18 years of age, have been detained in Pakistan due to lack of legal documents and are being kept in the prisons of Karachi”.

Officials at the Ministry of Refugees and Returnees Affairs say that soon a joint committee will be established to deal with the problems of Afghan immigrants in Pakistan.

Abdulmutallab Haqqani, the spokesman of the Ministry, said: “We are making more efforts to deal with the problems of Afghan immigrants, and soon a committee to deal with the problems of immigrants and returnees will be established.”

According to the statistics of this ministry, now more than three million Afghan refugees are living in Pakistan, and in some cases, they are facing psychological and physical violence.
