WFP halts distribution of ‘rotten’ wheat flour in Daikundi

KABUL (SW) – The World Food Programme has halted distribution of wheat flour in Daikundi Afghanistan after reports of it being rotten and unhygienic.

In recent days, people in a number of provinces have been complaining about the low quality of wheat flour distributed by the World Food Program. Yesterday, a video became public in the media that showed the World Food Program has distributed poor quality and rotten flour to people in Daikendi.

However, officials of the World Food Program in Afghanistan told Salam Watandar that the program has taken measures after receiving complaints about the distribution of low-quality and rotten flour in Daikundi.

Philippe Kropf, Head of Communications World Food Programme Afghanistan, told Salam Watandar: “WFP is aware that families in Daikundi received flour that was not of a quality that was up to our standards. The beneficiaries came to know about this when they took the wheat flour home and reported it. After that, we stopped the distribution of this flour and we will replace the distributed flour packets.”

He added that the fresh wheat flour was taken from the warehouses of this program in Kabul and is on the way to Daikendi. “WFP collects these packages of flour from all over the country to test its quality.”

The WFP has adopted a mechanism to stabilize the distribution of low-quality materials to the needy. “The World Food Program has a hotline and a feedback mechanism that helps us report such issues and stakeholders can call us and we follow up on each of these cases and take them seriously.”

In addition to this, some residents of Bamyan and Ghazni also complained about the low quality.
