Girls demand reopening of schools

KABUL (SW) – A number of young girls gathered to stage a protest against the persistent closure of girls’ schools in the country.

These young girls gathered in a closed space and protested against the prohibition of girls’ education and the expulsion of female students from Kabul University by holding banners.

They held slogans such as “Women, work, freedom”, “Education is our right” and condemned the discrimination against ethnic Hazara students. By issuing a resolution, the protestors said: “Education is the basic and inalienable right of every Afghan citizen, especially women and girls.”

The protesters also accused and condemned the international community for being silent against the restrictions imposed on women by the Islamic Emirate.

In part of the resolution, it is stated: “It has been more than 400 days that the school gates have been closed to girls above the sixth grade in Afghanistan. Women are insulted, they have no bread to eat but the world is silent and watching. As Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur, noted, the global conscience has gone into a deep sleep”.

Closing the school to female students above the sixth grade has caused many reactions inside and outside the country, including street protests but the Islamic Emirate has so far refused to reopen them.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman of the Islamic Emirate, said a while ago that the reopening of girls’ schools is inevitable but the time is not clear yet.
