Mounting inflation leads to growing anxiety in Kabul

KABUL (SW) – The mounting inflation and shortage of basic items of use have led to panic and anxiety in the capital city, Kabul.

A number of Kabul residents are worried about the rising price of basic items in the markets. They say that while many citizens are living in poverty and face unemployment, the price of basic materials is rising every day and they are unable to provide enough food for their families.

“People can not afford to buy, thousands of afghanis are spent on house rent and school fees, we can not afford proper food at all,” said Tahmineh, a Kabul resident.

Babi Ghousi, another Kabul resident, also says that her husband is paralyzed and lives in a rented house, and that her living conditions have worsened as basic material prices have risen.

Traders in Kabul markets, on the other hand, say that the prices of all materials have risen sharply over the past month.

According to them, a month ago the price of a bag of flour was 2,400 afghanis and now it has reached 2,800 afghanis. The price of oil has also increased from 2,800 afghanis to 3,100 afghanis and rice from 2,700 afghanis to 3,200 afghanis.

Experts point to the economic problems on the Russia-Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Khan Jan Alokozai, a member of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment, told Salam Watandar that problems with money transfers were also a major factor behid the rise in prices in the country.

However, Abdul Rahman Habib, spokesman for the Ministry of Economy, announced that jobs were being created to address the issue. He said the implementation of major economic projects in the agricultural sector will create jobs for thousands of people and free the country from over-dependence on agricultural imports.
