Deputy High Commissioner of the UNHCR arrives in Kabul

KABUL (SW) – Kelly Clements, Deputy High Commissioner, UN Refugee Agency, arrived in Kabul this afternoon to assess the situation.

During this trip, she assured of the efforts to address the social challenges the Afghan citizens face.

According to the UNHCR, she will meet with the government officials in the coming days to discuss a range of issues.
She emphasized that Afghanistan now has at least 6 million refugees, a large proportion of whom are internally displaced.

Kelly Clements added that the UNHCR is trying to ensure that all these displaced people and citizens of Afghanistan live in peace and in good conditions in their own country. “In the next few days, I will discuss various issues with the authorities,” she said. “I hope we have good results for the better life of all Afghans.”

Her visit to Afghanistan comes amid reports in recent days of the grim plight of Afghan refugees abroad, particularly in Iran, Pakistan and Turkey.

Turkey has recently forcibly expelled hundreds of Afghan refugees.
