Analysts warn of serious consequences of natural disasters

KABUL (SW) – In the wake of the recent earthquakes, floods and untimely rainfall in a number of provinces, economic experts are warning that these events are going to cause serious damage to the economy.

Experts believe that there is a close relationship between natural events and economic growth, and that these events cause irreparable damage to the country’s production, investment, industry and trade.

They added that the occurrence of natural disasters in Afghanistan, which is an agricultural country, directly affects economic growth.

Taj Mohammad Talash, an economist, told Salam Watandar that the quake and floods were hurting agricultural production and investment in the country’s industry and trade sector.

“When natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanoes and floods start, it damages natural resources,” he said. “In the industry, mining, human resources and the construction are being impacted.”

Behir Zeland, another economist, says that natural disasters challenge economic development. According to him, the increase in natural events will slow down economic growth.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rahman Habib, spokesman for the Ministry of Economy, admits that the natural disasters of the last few days have caused economic damage. He added that the rains of the last two or three days, in addition to the loss of life, have destroyed some agricultural lands and also caused the destruction of livestock.

Ministry of Economy officials, however, demanded for more time to gather information to address the damage caused by recent events.
