Mujahid says no restrictions on press freedom

KABUL (SW) – In his message on World Press Freedom Day, Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, claimed there were no restrictions on media in the country.

Mujahid wrote on Twitter that the country’s media operate and publish freely within the framework of the law, and that the Islamic Emirate supports it.

Referring to the cessation of the activities of a number of media outlets in the country, the spokesman of the Islamic Emirate said that the media outlets that ceased their activities after the withdrawal of American forces were not the cause of the Islamic Emirate’s rise to power, but due to the loss of donors. He stated that some embassies funded these media outlets for their own goals.

Mujahid has assured that the Islamic Emirate will cooperate with the media as much as possible in solving their economic problems.

His message also stated that there are currently no journalists imprisoned in the prisons of the Islamic Emirate. Mujahid said that sometimes the invitation of journalists to some departments is for the purpose of disclosure and understanding, and does not mean imprisonment or torture.

The spokesman for the Islamic Emirate called the concerns of some institutions in this regard “inappropriate” and added that the Islamic Emirate continues to support the media.

According to Amnesty International, 6,400 journalists have lost their jobs since the Islamic Emirate took office. At the same time, 231 media outlets have been shut down, and many are facing security threats and financial problems.

Amnesty International added that 80 journalists and media workers have been detained and harassed during this period. The organization stated that female journalists suffered the most.
