Cholera spreading at an alarming rate

KABUL (SW) – Cholera is spreading fast across the country, warned officials at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Kabul on Thursday.

According to the records registered at this hospital, only on Tuesday, at least 35 people, 17 of whom were women, were referred to the infectious disease hospital with symptoms of cholera.

Faridullah Omari, a specialist trainer at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, told Salam Watandar that the number of patients suspected of having cholera is increasing and if this situation continues, they will face a lack of facilities for diagnosis and treatment.

Meanwhile, patients with suspected symptoms of cholera who have been referred to an infectious disease hospital report an increase in the disease at their place of residence. They emphasized that there is a lack of facilities and medicine in the hospital.

“Recently, the disease has increased. I know about some of my neighbors. Many have come to the hospital, some have the entire family infected with the disease,” Mira Agha, a patient at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, told Salam Watandar.

However, officials at the Ministry of Public Health say 52,397 cases of cholera have been reported since the beginning of the year, of which 15 have died.

Javed Hajir, a spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health, told Salam Watandar that the highest numbers were recorded in Kabul, Helmand, Herat, Kandahar and Nangarhar provinces.

In recent days, reports of hundreds of cases of cholera-like illness have spread to some other provinces as well.

Cholera is a contagious disease that is transmitted to humans through contaminated food and water. Doctors call it an acute and deadly disease.
