Removal of national flag from public offices stirs strong reaction

KABUL (SW) – The Islamic Emirate’s move to replace the tricolor flag of Afghanistan with its white movement-era one has stirred strong reaction at home and abroad.

As of Saturday night, March 19, a letter attributed to the Islamic Emirate was shared on social media, asking all government departments to use the white flag of the Islamic Emirate instead of the tricolor flag at their offices.

A number of citizens of the country have reacted sharply to this decision by the Islamic Emirate. They criticized the Islamic Emirate government for this and called on the officials of the Islamic Emirate to accept the tricolor flag as the national flag.

Meanwhile, Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhail, the former governor of Nangarhar, wrote on Facebook that governments should choose their priorities and stop the issues that create a rift between the government and the people.

“Governments must choose their priorities and avoid all issues that would damage national unity and create a rift between the people and the government,” he wrote. “In fact, the national flag is not limited to one group, position or ethnicity; rather, it is the heritage of all the people of Afghanistan that must be preserved and cared for by all.”

However, Aziz Maarej, a former diplomat and political analyst, called his move by the Islamic Emirate as been inspired by “self-styled” sharia.

Although officials at the Islamic Emirate have not officially commented, a number of media outlets have reported that the letter is official.

According to Ahmadullah Wasiq, head of the National Radio and Television, the letter was issued by the Office of the Leader of the Islamic Emirate and is official and binding.

At the same time, the color / logo of the national television, which was decorated with the color of the tricolor flag, was also removed. Now, instead of the former logo of this media, only the word “national” is seen in white and green background.

On the other hand, a number of citizens praised the work of the Islamic Emirate and said that the white flag should be recognized as the national flag of Afghanistan.

Earlier, the governor of the Islamic Emirate for Khost recently addressed the residents of the province in a video with threatening language and said that if they do not remove the national flag from the roofs of their houses and shops, they will no longer have the right to complain.
