MEP criticizes international community for ignoring Afghanistan

MONITORING (SW) – Member of the European Parliament, Clare Daly, has lashed out at the international community for ignoring the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

In her remarks at the plenary meeting of the EU Parliament, she said tens of thousands of Afghans are seeking refuge in different countries, five million children are facing famine and there has been surge by 500% in child marriages.

“… no wall-to-wall TV coverage, no emergency humanitarian response, no special plenaries not even a mention in this plenary. No Afghani delegations, no statements!”, she said while making a point about the world neglecting the crisis in Afghanistan in the wake of the war in Ukraine.

“They (Afghans) must be wondering what makes their humanitarian crisis so unimportant. Is it the color of their skin, is it that they are not white, they are not European”.

Earlier, the International Rescue Committee issued a statement saying that the situation in Afghanistan should not be ignored as the world turns its attention to the conflict and displacement crisis in Ukraine.

It stressed the need for the world to seize the opportunity in Afghanistan to prevent famine, save lives and end the horrific conditions against women and girls in Afghanistan.
