SAO to look into affairs of 200 public offices

KABUL (SW) – The Supreme Audit Office would look into the affairs of at least 200 public offices for transparency and accountability purposes, said officials on Monday.

Officials from the audit office announced today at a news conference in Kabul the functions and achievements of the 1400 Solar Hijri year. Fazlullah Nezami, an adviser to the Supreme Audit Office, said at the meeting that although the office inspects about 300 government offices annually, but according to the 1401 fiscal year plan, next year 200 government offices will be monitored for compliance with the law.

The advisor to the Supreme Audit Office added that the agency is not affiliated with any government agency and is independent, and that its activities are carried out professionally and in accordance with the law.

On the other hand, Najiba-ur-Rehman Rahmani, the administrative and financial deputy of the Supreme Audit Office, said at the meeting that about 775 million afghanis of revenue in the fiscal year had been collected and deposited in the government treasury.

Rahmani added that after the recent developments in the country, concerns about the misappropriation of public assets increased, which led to the Supreme Audit Office taking action and taking serious measures.

“After the transformation, we were all worried that public assets might be affected,” said the deputy director of administration and finance at the Supreme Audit Office. “The Supreme Audit Office has made it its responsibility to audit public assets. 59 public sector government agencies are under audit.”

Officials from the Supreme Audit Office also said that as a result of their investigations, 17 cases of abuse of office, embezzlement and usurpation of land have been registered and about 117 million afghanis have been recovered for the government treasury.

Auditing compliance with laws and regulations, auditing the performance of departments, reviewing the information system and sending cases of misuse of public assets to the Attorney General are the responsibilities of the Supreme Audit Office.
