Kamal Khan Dam’s spillways opened towards Iran

KABUL (SW) – Reports suggest the Islamic Emirate officials have allowed the water flow from the Kamal Khan Dam towards Iran.

Local sources in Nimroz confirmed to Salam Watandar that the Kamal Khan Dam spillways have been opened towards Iran.

Iranian media also reported that the spillways at the Kamal Khan Dam on the Helmand River were  opened for the water to flow towards Iran yesterday.

IRNA, the official news agency of Iran, said that the Islamic Emirate has opened the spillways of Kamal Khan Dam to Iran and the Helmand River water has started flowing towards Iran.

Earlier, a spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had said that the Helmand River has a defined legal regime for water use between the two countries, and that according to an agreement between Iran and Afghanistan, Iran’s water rights are clear. He added that the Afghan government is also committed to this water right.

Last week, the Iranian embassy in Afghanistan announced that the Iranian foreign minister had met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting foreign minister of the Islamic Emirate, to discuss Iran’s water rights.

The statement said that the Afghan side, while emphasizing respect for international treaties, had said that the technical delegations of the two countries would soon resolve the relevant talks and discussions.

Officials at the Islamic Emirate have not yet commented, but officials at the Nimroz Agriculture Department say the water from Kamal Khan Dam has been released due to irrigation in the province.
