KABUL (SW) – Analysts believe that the over twenty years of the NATO presence in Afghanistan had very little to offer to the common people here.

The NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers yesterday that NATO’s 20-year mission in Afghanistan was fruitful. According to him, NATO was able to prevent any terrorist attacks from Afghanistan on its allies, weaken global terrorist organizations and prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for terrorists.

But, political analysts believe that the 20-year presence of NATO and the United States in Afghanistan was unattainable.

Saleh Mohammad Saleh, a former member of parliament and a political analyst, says NATO has not done a fundamental and effective job in Afghanistan in the last 20 years. According to him, during the presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan, terrorist groups became more and more active and corruption increased.

Another political scientist, Mirbat Khan Mangal, believes that NATO and the United States have had no success in Afghanistan and have fueled corruption, instability and hypocrisy during their missions. He says that although the international community has been emphasizing the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan, there are now more than 20 terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan.

The meeting of NATO foreign ministers began yesterday and continues today. NATO members at the meeting would assess their 20-year presence in Afghanistan.
