Taliban urged to recognize rights of the Shi’ite community

KABUL (SW) – Leaders of the Afghanistan Shi’ite Religious Council on Tuesday called for legal recognition in the forthcoming government by the Taliban.

The participants at a meeting here specific demands from the Taliban on behalf of the Shi’ite community in the country. One of these demands was the formation of a comprehensive government in which all ethnic groups in Afghanistan are present.

Marzieh Kazemi, a university professor, said at the meeting that in order to move forward, all citizens of the country should have the same rights and privileges. She said that the Shi’ite sect must be legally recognized in the future system.

Mohammad Akbari, a member of the ASRC, said on the occasion that in order to form a united country, the Taliban must take onboard other ethnic, political and social groups.

According to him, acts of discrimination would damage the Islamic brotherhood and national unity.
