Ministry of Women Affairs was ‘symbolic’, says Mujahed

KABUL (SW) – The Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed has said that the now defunct Ministry of Women Affairs was just ‘symbolic’ with no service to the masses.

In an interview with an Iranian media outlet, Zabihullah Mujahed, spokesman for the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture, said this while responding to a questions about the ongoing protests by women in this connection.

The Taliban spokesman said the Ministry of Women’s Affairs was a “symbolic department” in the former regime and had no practical tasks or executions. He added that despite the existence of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, women still had no access to their most basic rights in the country’s villages.

According to Zabihullah Mujahed, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan advocates for a more effective and active services for women. He stressed that in the future, this office will be regulated within the framework of Sharia law, and it does not need to be called a ministry, deputy or directorate.

This comes as a number of women activists and women’s rights defenders in Kabul on Sunday protested against the removal of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs from the Taliban cabinet. The women said they would continue their protests until the Ministry of Women’s Affairs became active again.
