Taliban capture Zaranj city in Nimroz province

HERAT (SW) – The Taliban have captured Zaranj city of the Nimroz province in the west of Afghanistan, multiple sources confirmed on Friday.

Ghulam Siddiq Noorzai, spokesman for police in Nimroz, confirmed the fall of Zaranj to the Taliban. Noorzai said that the reason for the fall of Zaranj was the lack of reinforcements.

Meanwhile, a reliable local source in Nimroz on condition of anonymity, told Salam Watandar that the Taliban seized the border police compound and the border battalion afternoon on Friday. According to this source, there was fighting between the security forces and the Taliban over the NDS compound in the province.

The sources said that the Taliban were able to capture most of the city of Zaranj without clashes with security forces. The sources said that some local officials have taken refuge in Iran after fleeing from Nimroz.

With the capture of Zaranj, all ports in the western provinces have been fallen to the insurgents.
