ASSADABAD (SW) – Spike in fighting in Kunar has displaced at least 50,000 people, said officials on Monday.
According to the local officials in Kunar, over the past two months, 50,000 people have been displaced and the number of displaced people is increasing as a result of heavy fighting in a number of districts in the province. “These people have been displaced from Nari and Ghaziabad districts,” said Wasefiullah Wasefi, deputy governor of Kunar.
According to him, about 2,000 displaced families have been assisted so far.

Kunar’s deputy governor said people are being displaced from Taliban-controlled areas because they are being harassed by members of this group. Wasefi added that efforts are underway to return the displaced to Ghaziabad and Nari districts.
The displaced people living in school buildings and other public facilities have been complaining about their poor living conditions and have demanded serious government attention.
Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has denied the Kunar deputy governor’s claim that people fled because of Taliban harassment.
