Kandahar residents stage large demo for peace

KANDAHAR CITY (SW) – A large number of Kandahar residents gathered in the city on Wednesday to call for peace in the country.

The protesters, who included civil society activists, youth and common citizens, said the raging violence in the country was causing deaths and miseries beyond limits.

According to them, there is fighting and bombing every night in the city of Kandahar, as a result of which some 7,000 families have been displaced so far and more than 10 civilians are killed and wounded every day.

Demonstrators said people have fled their homes and businesses have collapsed due to the current unrest.

They called on the government to pay serious attention to the security of the city.

Speaking on behalf of the marchers, Mohammed Aaron Almas called on the parties involved in the conflict to work for a ceasefire first and foremost. “We are humans, no Taliban or the government forces have the right to kills us”, he said.

In addition to the surrounding districts, fighting has been going on in Kandahar city for the past 21 days, as a result of which more than 10 people are killed and wounded every day.
