HERAT CITY (SW) – At least 16 security forces got killed in a Taliban attack on a security position in Herat province near the Afghanistan – India Friendship Dam, said officials.
Allah Mohammad Hamdard, commander of the security battalion at the dam, told Salam Watandar that the Taliban fighters had attacked a checkpoint this morning in the western part of the Chesht district.

According to the commander of the battalion, at least 16 security froces were killed in the attack, and the base fell to the Taliban. Hamdard added that about 300 to 400 Taliban fighters have now gathered around the dam and intend to seize the district.
The commander of the dam protection battalion said that he had repeatedly asked the Zafar Corps and the Herat local administration to send more troops to the dam, but no attention has been paid.
The Taliban have not yet commented.
The Afghanistan – India Friendship Dam (also known as Salma Dam) was completed at an estimated cost of $ 300 million in 2016 in the western Herat province bordering Iran.
