Health ministry warns of surging COVID-19 cases

KABUL (SW) – Frightened by the deadly surge in COVID-19 cases in India, Afghanistan on Tuesday launched nationwide campaign with the support of religious scholars to convince people to adhere to preventive measures.

Officials at the Ministry of Public Health has warned that given the spread of the corona virus in the country, if the people do not take corona seriously and ignore health recommendations, Afghanistan will also suffer the same fate as India.

Officials warned that any failure to take the coronavirus seriously could exacerbate the situation.

Acting Minister of Public Health Waheed Majrooh said during the nationwide campaign that Afghanistan has entered the third wave of the pandemic, which is more threatening than the first and second.

According to him, if people do not follow health recommendations, do not pay attention to social distancing and do not wear masks, there is a fear that Afghanistan will experience difficult days like India. Majrooh urged people to go to health centers for vaccination.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Hajj and Religious Affairs, Mohammad Qasim Halimi, called on religious scholars to educate the people about the threat of coronavirus and encourage them to follow the guidelines of the Ministry of Public Health.

The Afghan embassy in New Delhi said yesterday that about 30 Afghans had died in India due to corona virus.
