FAIZABAD (SW) – Thousands of families in Badakhshan are set to be connected to the national power grid with the completion of Shurabak Dam, said officials.
Officials at the Energy Regulatory Authority have said 15,000 families in Badakhshan will have electricity once the dam is inaugurated.
Ahmad Seer Nekzad, a spokesman for the Energy Services Regulatory Authority, said in a statement that the construction of the Shurabak Dam in Badakhshan has been completed after a gap of about two years. According to Nekzad, the construction of Shurabak Dam, which cost an estimated 45 million euros, has been constructed by a Turkish company FICA. The spokesman for the Energy Regulatory Authority added that the dam has been built with financial support from Germany.
Nekzad said: “Shurabak Dam of Badakhshan province is located at a distance of 2 km west of Faizabad city and is built on the Kokcha River. The Dam has the capacity to generate 1.2 megawatts of electricity”.
The spokesman for the Energy Regulatory Authority further said soon President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani would inaugurate the dam. According to him, three turbines would be installed at this Dam, which will have the capacity to generate more than 7 megawatts of electricity.
It is worth noticing construction of the Shurabak Dam was stopped multiple times owing to security concerns.
