HERAT CITY (SW) – Mohammad Ismail Khan, a senior member Jamiat-e-Islami on Monday expressed opposition towards a party congress held last week that elected Atta Mohammad Noor as the chief.
Addressing a party gathering in Herat, he called that gathering of the Jamiat party’s splinter group as fraudulent and personally motivated, and called on all members of the party to boycott it.
Last Thursday, the general assembly of the Jamiat party, chaired by Sayed Enayatullah Shadab, was held in Kabul to elect the party’s chairman. At the meeting, which was attended by a number of Jamiat party figures such as Mohammad Ismail Khan, Mohammad Yunus Qanuni and a number of other Jamiat party members, Atta Mohammad Noor was elected as the chairman of the party’s split branch by a majority vote.
Ismail Khan told the gathering in Herat that he had worked hard to prevent divisions, but members of the party’s splinter branch did not listen to his words. He added individuals who were not members of the party’s branch in Kabul a few days ago were invited based on personal connections.
Ismail Khan emphasized that efforts are underway to hold a new congress of the party after consulting with the members of the leadership of the Jamiat-e-Islami after the proposed meeting on Afghan peace process in Turkey.
