Government blamed for retaliating against MPs

KABUL (SW) – A number of Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members claim the government has sacked relatives of parliamentarians in reaction to the rejection of draft annual budget.

Speaker Mir Rahman Rahmani said during Monday’s plenary session that the government has initiated such pressure tactics in retaliation to the rejection of budget by the house. He said those sacked by the government are the people who have served the system for many years and their removal is far from political ethics.

Taking part in the debate, Habib-ur-Rehman Pedram, a representative of the people of Herat in the house, said the government has sacked a number of public servants in reaction to the MPs raising red cards while voting on the draft annual budget.

The government has not yet responded in connection with these allegations.

The draft annual budget has twice been rejected by the parliament firstly over 17 alleged violations and for the second time for 19 alleged violations in the draft.

The finance ministry has sent third draft of the annual budget to the house, and the MPs are yet to vote on it.

In his remarks, speaker Rahmani emphasized that no authority should make unjust judgments or question the motives of the parliamentarians to ensure justice. He also urged President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to end the culture of ad-hoc leadership at ministries.

He asked the president to nominate qualified people for the ministries run by the supervisors. The Ministries of Women’s Affairs, Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Education, Information and Culture, as well as the nominated head for the Central Bank failed to win the vote of conference.
