‘No legitimate reasons for release of more Taliban inmates’

KABUL (SW) – Waheed Umer, a top preside”ntial adviser said on Wednesday there are no justifications left for the release of more Taliban inmates following the surge in attacks by the insurgents.

He said this at the inauguration of the accountability drive at the Government Media Information Center. He said the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners proved that instead of moving towards peace, the group had increased violence.

Mr Omar added that for this reason, the release of more Taliban prisoners was not justified at all.

Meanwhile, Amrullah Saleh, the first vice president, said in a social media post the Taliban should be made aware once again that there is need to build trust in connection with the citizens’ demand for the execution of terrorists. “Once again, in connection with the voice of the nation for the execution of terrorists, the Taliban must be made aware that the negotiation process needs to build trust,” Saleh said.

This comes as the Taliban have called for the release of another batch of 7,000 prisoners, the removal of the group’s name from the UN blacklist, and the establishment of an ‘Islamic state’ to advance the Intra-Afghan peace talks.
