Angry mob attacks local radio in Kunduz

KUNDUZ CITY (SW) – The violent mob assault on regional radio stations in Kunduz has been widely condemned.

Local sources in Kunduz said that hundreds of angry worshipers attacked three private local radio stations at around 1:30 pm on Friday on the orders of religious cleric Mullah Imam Firuzkuhi in the province.

Radio Zohra, Radio Kayhan and Radio Cheragh were among the radio stations that were attacked. According to sources, worshipers destroyed all broadcasting equipment of Radio Zohra. Mohsen Ahmadi, the managing director of Radio Zohra in Kunduz, told Salam Watandar that the imam of the mosque had issued a fatwa for attacking the radio station. He said the cleric charged the radio station for the automatic mixing of frequency signals, which resulted in the mosque speakers capturing sounds of the radio broadcast during prayers.

Ahmadi added that due to the lack of electricity, his radio station had no live transmissions from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM on that day. According to Ahmadi, the “angry” worshipers destroyed all of the office and broadcast equipment without inquiring about the facts.

The director of Radio Zohrah wants the case to be followed up by the Kunduz local administration and press freedom institutions. Kunduz local government officials have not yet commented.

NAI – supporting independent media organizations, has condemned this attack.
