KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has held a telephonic conversation with the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

According to a statement issued by the Arg (Presidency) in Kabul, the two leaders discussed matters related to the peace process and NATO’s support for sustainable peace in Afghanistan.

“Spoke with @ashrafghani on the situation in #Afghanistan where it has been a long and hard road towards the peace talks. They are fragile but offer the best chance for peace. #NATO remains committed to #Afghanistan’s security”, tweeted Stoltenberg.

This was the first telephonic conversation between the two leaders following the electoral victory of Joe Biden in the US presidential elections.

Last month, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the Alliance has decided and reiterated again and again that its presence in Afghanistan is conditions-based.

He said this ahead of NATO defense minister meeting in Brussels. Stoltenberg said NATO has adjusted its presence as part of the peace process, but any further decision on further adjustment of the NATO presence in Afghanistan will be made based on assessment on the conditions on the ground and on whether Taliban meets their commitments under the US-Taliban agreement.
