Ulema Council denounces war, calls for peace

KABUL (SW) – Religious scholars from across 34 provinces on Sunday denounced ongoing war in the country.

At a gathering of religious scholars in the capital Kabul, they announced their support for peace talks, saying the ‘ongoing war for power’ has no legitimacy. The scholars urged the Taliban and the government to end the war and make peace.

Taking part in the debate, religious scholar Farmanullah Niazi said that religious scholars have a responsibility to heal the wounds of the nation for the sake of Allah. He called on both sides of the conflict to stop the bloodshed of innocent Muslims and to move beyond personal interests to end the war.

Mohammad Sarwar Omar, head of the secretariat of Afghanistan’s Uleme Council, said on the occasion that religious scholars wanted both sides to commit to peace. Supporting the intra-Afghan talks, he said both sides should be sincere in their talks and the talks should not be limited to rhetoric and should help bring peace to the war-torn nation.

The presidential spokesman, Sediq Sediqqi said on Thursday the Taliban have no legal or religious justifications left to continue war against people and the state of Afghanistan. “Scholars in the Islamic world and in Afghanistan, for years, have considered the ongoing war by the Taliban against the people and the state of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, forbidden and without legal justification,” he said while hailing similar comments made by Sheikh Ahmad Al-Raissouni, president of the International Union of Muslim Scholar in a recent interview.
