Saleh’s takeover of Kabul security a ‘political stunt’

KABUL (SW) – Members of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) have expressed concerns over vice president Amrullah Saleh taking charge of security affairs in the capital Kabul.

A number of MPs while taking part in debate over deteriorating security in the capital city said that the new presidential decree has no effect on the law and order situation and it would only harm morale of security institutions.

The MPs said that entrusting the security of Kabul to Amrullah Saleh shows that the government is incapable of managing and improving the situation with relevant institutions.

Mir Rahman Rahmani, speaker of the WJ, also criticized the president’s new decision, saying the government should support and strengthen the established security institutions instead of weakening them.

Military experts also called the presidential decree in this regard as a political stunt. According to them, this decision was not made to improve the security situation, but aimed at attracting popular support.

Taking direct charge of the security affairs, Saleh has issued a number of directives and has been visiting various parts of the city to assess the law and order situation.
