Intra-Afghan negotiations in Doha faced with deadlock

KABUL (SW) – A well-placed source has told Salam Watandar that talks between contact groups of the Taliban and Afghan government continued to face deadlock in the Qatari capital, Doha.

After the third general meeting of the peace delegation, the contact groups of both sides have not yet met. A source close to the peace talks in Qatar said the Afghan government delegation was ready for the meeting, but no clear response had been received from the Taliban delegation.

Earlier, at the third general meeting of the two sides, it was stressed that the contact groups should convene meetings as soon as possible and find solutions to their differences.

The source close to the peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban in Qatar told Salam Watandar that the contact groups were scheduled to meet on Saturday.

Khalid Noor, a member of the Afghan government’s delegation in Doha, said discussions were ongoing, but no progress had been made. Noor added that there was hope that the two sides might reach an agreement soon. “Discussions are going on. It is not known when we will reach a conclusion. We are trying. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow, we will try”, he said.

Earlier, the third general meeting of the contact groups was held on October 14. All members of the two delegations stressed the need to resolve their differences. However, three days have passed since that meeting.

Meanwhile, civil society representatives in Kabul, Helmand, Nangarhar, Herat, Kunduz, Paktia and a number of other provinces symbolically buried the ‘coffins of war’ on Saturday as part of calls for truce and peace in the country.
