Kabulis panicked by alarming surge in crimes

KABUL (SW) – Alarming hike in armed robberies and burglaries at gun point in Kabul have irked residents in the capital city.

In conversation with Salam Watandar, a number of Kabul dwellers said they feel their lives and belongings are utterly unsafe here. Residents of Kabul said that the situation in the city is deteriorating day by day, but and the government seems to have no solution.

Many agreed the crime rates shoot-up particularly in the evenings when darkness prevails all over and the residents are left on the mercy of criminals .

Abdul Qareen Bagramwal, a resident of Kabul, said the issue of increased insecurity was not limited to the capital, adding that life in the provinces was not safe either.

The Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian said in this regard there have been 146 criminal incidents in the past 20 days with the security forces arresting 133 suspected criminals in connection with the incidents. He added that among the arrested criminals included individuals involved in murders, armed robberies, disturbing public order and other similar criminal incidents. He stressed a number of measures have been taken to improve the security situation in Kabul.

The rise in crimes in Kabul has also prompted the Taliban to issue a statement announcing actions to combat crime in Kabul.

However, presidential spokesman, Sediq Sediqqi, called the Taliban’s statement as “ridiculous” and said the Taliban do not have the courage to come to Kabul.

The rise in crimes has also sparked protests from citizens, who have launched a campaign on social media under the hashtag of “Kabul is not safe”.
