Saudi Arabia appoints first ambassador to Syria in over a decade

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA (SW) – On Sunday, May 26, Saudi Arabia has appointed its first ambassador to Syria in over 12 years.

The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) announced that Faisal bin Saud Al-Mujfel has been appointed as the new Saudi ambassador to Damascus.

This marks the first Saudi ambassadorial appointment to Syria since the closure of the Saudi embassy in Damascus in 2012 during the Syrian civil war.

Faisal bin Saud Al-Mujfel expressed his gratitude to King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud for their trust in selecting him for this role.

He emphasized his commitment to serving Saudi Arabia’s interests and strengthening bilateral relations.

Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia reopened its embassy in Damascus after more than a decade of severed diplomatic relations.

In a reciprocal move, Syria resumed its diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia last year and appointed a new ambassador to Riyadh in December.
