KABUL (SW) – Hedayatullah Badri, the Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Afghanistan/ Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB), has called for the removal of sanctions imposed on the country’s banking sector.
He stated that these sanctions, implemented by various countries, have negatively affected financial stability.
In a statement on its official X account, the Central Bank reported that Badri discussed this issue with Rosemary DiCarlo, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, highlighting that the sanctions have decreased Afghan citizens’ purchasing power and hindered banks’ access to global financial systems.
The statement noted: “The presence of international sanctions forces international transactions to be conducted through unofficial channels, contrary to the laws, regulations, and policies of Afghanistan’s Central Bank.”
Badri appealed to the international community to collaborate with Afghanistan in developing financial services and to lift the sanctions on its banking sector.
Following the re-establishment of the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan, the international community, particularly the United States, imposed a series of sanctions on Afghanistan’s banking system, prohibiting any official transactions with Afghan banks.
