KABUL (SW) – Officials in Kabul municipality have asked the residents of this city to dig absorption wells to absorb their daily water consumption.

Nematullah Barakzai, the spokesperson of Kabul Municipality, says that this decision was taken in order to manage surface water and it is likely to become mandatory in the future. He adds: “The issue of underground water in Kabul is a serious issue and the Ministry of Energy and Water also has this issue. Those who dig wells should also have absorption wells, besides this, car washes must also have a water filtration and absorption system. This issue covers the entire city of Kabul.”

Meanwhile, some residents of the west of the capital also say that the Kabul Municipality has asked them to dig absorption wells in their mansions to absorb their daily water consumption.

Abdul Manan, a resident of in Kabul, says: “We were told to dig an absorption well for the daily water consumption to be absorbed into the ground and people will get rid of this lack of water. They asked for 10 to 15 meters, it is not arbitrary, for now they have just advised us.”

Dawood, a resident of Dasht Barchi, who dug a well in his mansion after the request of the Kabul Municipality, says that this is a positive step. Because according to him, the used water is not wasted and is reabsorbed by the earth.

Dawood says: “I dug a well inside the mansion and covered it, I left a way for the water to go into the well because it’s a positive action, I did it, and the water is reabsorbed into the ground instead of going out.”

In addition, Kabul Municipality has asked the owners of car washes, bathrooms, carpet cleaners and manufacturing companies to dig absorption wells to absorb their water.

Vaisullah, who owns a car wash in the west of Kabul, says: “They came and showed us the plan of the well. We dug three wells, which cost approximately 70,000 afghanis.”

This is despite the fact that in recent years, due to successive droughts, the level of underground water in the capital has decreased to the point that this year, different parts of the city are facing a serious water shortage problem.
