Paktika banns Pakistani rupees in a bid to promote afghanis

SHARANA (SW) – In a bid to promote the use of local afghani currency, authorities in Paktika province have banned trade in Pakistani rupees.

The officials of the Department of Information and Culture of Paktika has said that from Saturday onwards, all sorts of trades in rupees are banned and all transactions will be done in afghanis.

The director of information and culture of the said province, Amin Huzaifa, told Salam Watandar that the decision was made by the local officials in a joint meeting and it will be implemented. According to Huzaifa, if any shopkeeper conducts commercial transactions in rupees after this, his shop will be closed for three days.

It was also decided in the meeting that military and government officials should not exchange their salaries for rupees and violators will be punished.

The director of information and culture of Paktika added that the price list will be determined for the shopkeepers and the money changers are required to provide the afghani banknotes required by the shopkeepers.

Shopkeepers and residents of the Paktika’s center, Sharana, have welcomed this decision and say that it should be implemented properly.

Asadullah, a businessman in Sharana, said that such decisions were also made in the past, but according to him, they were not implemented. He added that people in this province turned back to using rupees because there were not enough afghanis in the market.
