Floods claim 100 lives in 10 provinces

CHARIKAR (SW) – The local officials of Parwan say that as a result of the floods in this province, two people died and five people, including women and children, are still missing.

Gholam Mohammad Jarrah, governor of Siahgard district of Parwan, has said that after yesterday’s storm, heavy floods have occurred in “Gol Lech, Bazar Chardeh, Farnjal and Mazaneh” areas of this district. In addition, Seyyed Hekmatullah Shamim, the spokesman of the governor of Parwan, has said that due to the floods in Siahgard and Shinwari districts of Ghorband valley, 27 residential houses, 20 cattle, 570 acres of agricultural land, 150 culverts and water dams, 36 kilometers of secondary roads have been destroyed.

The residents say that as a result of the floods, 50 solar panels and several protective houses, generators and tens of acres of their agricultural land have also been destroyed.

The latest statistics of the state ministry disaster management show that as a result of floods in 10 provinces in recent days, nearly 100 people have been killed and injured, and 920 residential houses have been destroyed.

The victims of these floods in different provinces have asked for help by complaining that their situation has not been taken care of.

Fawad, a resident of Ghazni, said: “There was a flood in our house and everything was destroyed. We have not received any help yet. We are 10 people in the family and we need help. We ask the government to send us help as soon as possible.”

Abdul Rahman, a resident of Jalriz district of Maidan Wardak, whose house and agricultural lands were destroyed by the Saturday night floods in this district, said that they are now living in the mountains under a tent. “It is not known how long it will be like this. At night, in the cold weather in the tent, children cry.”

According to the Ministry of Disaster Management, as a result of the floods in the past few days, more than seven thousand acres of agricultural land have been destroyed, and the most damage has been done to farmers in Maidan Wardak and Paghman district of Kabul.

Fahim, another resident of Jalriz Maidan Wardak, whose agricultural lands were destroyed, wants immediate attention to the victims in this province. “I planted two and a half acres of land with potatoes, beans, and other legumes, and it’s all gone,” he said. “All canals and streams are closed. Our desire is to help these people.”

Residents of Parwan, who have been affected by floods since the beginning of the year, also complain about the lack of aid.

Abdul Wahid, a resident of Shinwari district of Parwan, said that his crops and nearly four acres of agricultural land were destroyed in the floods four months ago in this province. “There was no help and no one paid attention. That’s why we are still facing problems,” he said.

Shafiullah Rahimi, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Disaster Management, said that more facilities and urgent assistance from the United Nations and aid organizations are needed to better deal with flood victims, especially in Wardak and Paghman fields. He added: “We use the facilities we have. We identify and help affected people, but for now, we need urgent facilities and help. Our wish is that they help the people of Afghanistan in this situation.”

According to the statistics of the Ministry of Disaster Management, as a result of the floods of the past four months, 3,800 livestock have been destroyed and nearly 42,000 acres of agricultural land has been destroyed.
