Analysts downplay West’s latest trip to the region

KABUL (SW) – Analysts believe the latest trip by the top US envoy for Afghanistan to the region would yield no significant results for the war-ravaged country.

The US Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Thomas West, the country’s special representative for Afghanistan, will travel to Middle Eastern countries including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey to discuss the current crisis with Afghan political and civil society representatives. It has stated that Mr. West’s trip will last for a week and he will also meet with his counterparts in these countries.

In the announcement of the US State Department, it is stated the international community is looking for a solution to Afghanistan’s difficult problems, which have been worsened by the Islamic Emirate’s recent decision to ban women from working with charities and the United Nations.

Meanwhile, Tariq Farhadi, a political analyst, says that Thomas West’s trips will not change the situation in Afghanistan. “I think this trip won’t work out like Thomas West’s other trips,” he added. “They should negotiate with the Taliban themselves. The caretaker government should remove the restrictions on girls’ education and women’s work to solve the issues of Afghanistan. Going to other places and marginal meetings will not have immediate results.”

Seyed Zia Hosseini, a political activist, also says that Thomas West’s trips are only due to the approaching time of the American elections and the pressure of the Republicans due to Joe Biden’s departure strategy from Afghanistan. “In the last two years, the soft political game has been played along with a series of financial support. Let us be optimistic that Thomas West will make a series of fundamental changes this time in relation to the relationship with the Islamic Emirate.”

However, Mohammad Bashar, a political activist close to the Islamic Emirate, says that the US has no will to interact positively with the Islamic Emirate. “America is always looking for conspiracies against the people of Afghanistan and uses pressure and force, which has created economic and political restrictions and travel restrictions for the leaders of the Islamic Emirate. The representative of the Islamic Emirate is not present in these meetings; For this reason, these visits will not yield results.”
