Half of the radios stations across the country gone off-air

KABUL (SW) – Nai – Supporting Independent Media Organization has said this year’s World Radio Day will be celebrated in Afghanistan at a time when nearly half of the radios stations across the country have ceased operations.

Nai has noted that radio has been among the most popular and the main mediums of communication in the world. The declaration states: “Afghanistan is the only country in the region that activated the radio about a century ago, and through radio waves, most people had access to radio programs, and it was the only entertainment and informational media unique to the time.”

It has added that in the last two decades, about 307 radio stations have been established in Afghanistan. “Radio has played an essential role in informing and providing information in the society of Afghanistan and has been able to attract a large audience.”

Nai has emphasized that this year World Radio Day is being celebrated while 48% of radio stations in Afghanistan have stopped their activities due to economic problems and challenges in the country.

Its findings show that out of 307 radio stations in Afghanistan, less than 170 radio stations are active.

It should be mentioned that after the return of the Islamic Emirate to power, the activities of dozens of audio, video and print media have stopped due to the restrictions imposed by the Islamic Emirate and economic problems, and hundreds of journalists have lost their jobs.
