KABUL (SW) – A number of citizens, complaining about the continued circulation of the old and damaged banknotes, say that this situation has made them face problems in daily transactions.

Shah Nawaz, one of the shopkeepers in Shahr Nau area of Kabul, said that these days, he always gets into trouble with his customers in daily shopping due to this problem.

“We have a lot of old money, not even half of it, it’s burnt and worn out. When we ourselves give the old money to the customers, they make a lot of fuss and don’t take it. Our request from the government is that new banknotes should be released to the market so the people can use it.”

Similarly, one of the money changers in Kabul, complaining about the increase in old banknotes in the market, said that a large part of the amount of money he exchanges daily is made up of old bank notes, and he faces a problem when taking it to the bank for conversion.

Meanwhile, economic expert Jabar Safi, worried about the depreciation of the afghani currency, said that if newly printed banknotes do not enter the market, foreign currencies may become popular in the markets.

However, the officials of the central bank, Da Afghanistan Bank, without specifying when the new banknotes will be distributed in the market, said that these banknotes will enter the market based on a specific procedure.

Hasibullah Nouri, the spokesperson of DAB, said “According to the necessity in the market and considering reasonable monetary policies and based on specific procedures, the central bank collects the old banknotes from the market and injects new banknotes into the market instead.”
