MONITORING (SW) – The top U.S. envoy for Afghanistan has said the country’s economic and social stability as well as the Taliban’s domestic and international legitimacy depend enormously on their treatment of Afghanistan’s mothers and daughters.

U.S. Special Representative Thomas West said in a series of tweets that while in Abu Dhabi, he met with a delegation led by Mulawi Mohammed Yaqub, the interim defense minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
“Took the opportunity to meet them to raise the deteriorating human rights situation, particularly for women & girls, & discuss shared interests in an Afghanistan that’s stable, prosperous, & at peace”, he tweeted.
“I called on the Taliban to respect women & girls’ rights to be educated & to work so that they can support their families”, he tweeted.
The U.S. envoy said they also discussed Afghanistan’s security situation, the Taliban’s continuing efforts against Daesh, steps to improve the business environment, and the international community’s robust response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

A day earlier, the Ministry of Defense of the Government of the Islamic Emirate confirmed the meeting between the Acting Minister of the Ministry, Mohammad Yaqub Mujahid, and Thomas West, the United States Special Representative for Afghanistan.

The ministry said in a statement that during his trip to the United Arab Emirates, Mr. Mujahid met and talked with Thomas West in the city of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. In this meeting, the two sides discussed the issues of Afghanistan.

In this meeting, the Acting Minister of Defense assured the US Special Representative that “Afghanistan is safe and all the border points are secure, and there is no threat from within the territory of Afghanistan to the countries of the region or the world, and there will be no threat from the territory of Afghanistan against anyone.”

Mohammad Yaqub Mujahid went to the United Arab Emirates on Saturday at the head of a delegation.
