MONITORING (SW) – A group of UN experts have expressed concern about the human rights situation in Afghanistan and asked the Islamic Emirate to stop flogging and public executions as soon as possible.

In this statement, the UN experts asked the authorities of the Islamic Emirate to immediately stop all types of “torturous” and “humiliating” punishments.

In this statement, it is stated that the Islamic Emirate has flogged more than 100 men and women in various provinces, including Logar, Takhar, Parwan, Laghman and Kabul, since November 18 of this year.

According to United Nations experts, these people have received 20 to 100 lashes for committing theft crimes, illicit relationships or violating social rules.

In a part of the statement, it is stated that flogging and execution in front of everyone violates the universal principles of prohibition of torture.

According to this statement, Afghanistan is one of the member states of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Prohibition of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which prohibits such punishments.

“International human rights law prohibits the imposition of such cruel sentences, especially the death penalty, after trials that apparently do not meet the necessary guarantees for a fair trial,” the statement said.

In addition to stopping the death penalty and flogging in front of everyone, they have demanded to guarantee the fair holding of the courts based on international standards.

Meanwhile, Bilal Karimi, one of the deputy spokespersons of the Islamic Emirate, reacting to this statement, said: “The limits that apply are the laws of Sharia and God, which we apply according to Islamic laws and jurisprudence. In this regard, including the international community, all factions must respect the laws of Islam and the beliefs of the Afghan people”.
