Ambiguity surrounds reopening of the passport directorates

KABUL (SW) – There has been no clear updates on the highly-anticipated reopening of the passport directorates across the country since the abrupt closure.

Nurullah Patman, the spokesperson of the General Directorate of Passports, told Salam Watandar that the technical problems are being worked on and once they are resolved, the process of distributing passports in the country will resume.

“In regard to restarting the distribution of passports, the Directorate of Passports has not made any decision, but the work of the technical team is going on and once the technical problems are solved, the distribution of passports will start again.”

With the suspension of the passport distribution process, a number of citizens believed that the passport booklets have run out and for this reason, no more passports will be distributed.

The spokesperson of the General Directorate of Passport denies the lack of passport booklets in this department and also informed about the transfer of three million new booklets to the country.

This has caused further concerns.

Fahimullah and Rahim Azimi, two of the passport applicants, told Salam Watandar that they had registered to receive a passport months ago, but they have not received it so far.

Fahimullah said there were some chances and scholarships that he missed. “We fell behind, unfortunately we suffered a lot in terms of not having a passport.”

Rahim Azimi said it has been five months since he has applied. “But there is no news about our passport”.

After the establishment of the Islamic Emirate, the process of distributing passports in the provinces was stopped and citizens could only receive passports in Kabul. However, the process now remains suspended in Kabul as well.
